Newroz Sports Club is a professional sports club based in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. The football team competes in the Iraq Stars League — the top flight of Iraqi football — and carries the nickname A City's Hope.
History
Top of Kurdistan when the season stopped
The Kurdistan Football Association cancelled the Kurdistan Premier League due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Newroz sat top of the table at that point — 15 matches played, 7 wins, 5 draws, 3 losses, and 26 points.
Historic promotion to the top flight
Newroz topped Group 1 of the Iraqi First Division League, collecting 30 points from 9 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss to qualify for the Iraqi Premier League for the first time. In the final they fell 1–0 to Al-Sinaa and finished runners-up.
Newroz Stadium opens
After the foundation stone was laid in January 2021, Newroz International Stadium opened on 26 October 2024. Capacity 13,500, built at a cost of $12 million. The first match was a 2–1 win over Al-Najaf SC.
Newroz Stadium
Newroz International Stadium is the club’s home in Sulaymaniyah. Designed for modern matchdays, it seats 13,500 supporters and marked a new chapter when it opened in October 2024 with a home win against Al-Najaf.
